Explosions in the Sky with Twin Sister

15 September 2011 | 7 PM
Free show in Marfa, Texas

Ballroom Marfa is honored to host the ambient and powerful post-rock group Explosions in the Sky with a twilight concert at Vizcaino Park on the edge of Marfa.

The quartet originally hails from West Texas (three of the members are from Midland), and the influence of the desert on their music is palpable. Equal parts romance and tragedy, their beautiful melodies have the tendency to ignite into head-spinning walls of noise — with rises and swells that somehow capture the feeling of being alive right now, in this moment. (Which is part of the reason their soundtrack to the film, Friday Night Lights, about high school football in Texas, resonates so much.)

Easily one of the most intense live bands playing today, their sound proves to be every bit as triumphant as their name implies. To witness what’s in store next Thursday night, and the majesty of their live show, watch their recent concert at Ancienne Belgique in Brussels.

Opening the show is New York band Twin Sister, who plays hypnotic pop à la Galaxie 500, with some Fleetwood Mac and synthy weirdness thrown in for good measure. Slack yet focused, their sound pulses like a spark in the dark distance on a desert highway where speed is relative. Think The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, with nods to the Cocteau Twins, Luscious Jackson, and Björk (watch the video for their latest single, “Bad Street,” here).

With the desert and mountains framing the stage, just as the sun sets, with a warm summer breeze, it’s going to be an unmissable concert, and perhaps the best way to see Explosions in the Sky. We hope you can make it.

Doors at 7 pm at Vizcaino Park in Marfa, Texas. Free for all. More information at ballroommarfa.org.
